What Does Your Heart Reflect?

Proverbs Picture

As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man. Proverbs 27:19

Every time I see a perfect reflection in calm water, I am awed. How does the light hit, bounce off, reflect or whatever at such an angle that what I see ahead of me is actually mirrored in the water. I especially enjoyed this while commuting to a job and I had to travel by a river. Early in the morning, in seemingly perfect conditions, when the sky was magnificently painted, the city across the river was perfectly reflected. I would glance at, glance at the road, glance back and just try to fathom how that is even possible.

Quite frankly, I’m not interested in the scientific particulars of how the reflection works; I just want to enjoy it. Do you know what I’m talking about with these reflections? We can see them on a smaller scale as we glance in the water right at our feet. Sometimes this image is fuzzy, but it represents a different way of looking at things. You see, the reflection in the water can’t change. What is there, is going to be reflected. If you want to change the reflection, you need to change the image.

“…so a man’s heart reflects the man” is the second half of the Proverb. Like I just said, in order to change what you see, you need to change what is available for reflection. Likewise, what is in your heart is what other people see. Your heart is a reflection of how you live every day. What you say, what you wear, and how you interact with people you know or complete strangers is a reflection of your heart.

So, I guess the question is: Are you happy with the reflection of your heart? Is your heart really reflecting who you want to be? Who God wants you to be? Or is the water constantly disturbed and you feel like you have different heart reflections for different people? It’s a hard journey and it will take time until you know your heart is truly reflecting who you were meant to be. And that reflection will be seen by everyone you come in contact with. People will notice a change.

If your heart is troubling you, pray. If what other people see in you scares you or doesn’t make you proud, pray. God can get your path straightened out, He’s the only one. And only then, will your heart not only reflect the man or woman you are, but you will also be reflecting God’s love. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Ninja Day: Complete with Ninja Whoopie Pies

Ok, so is it the summer slump for you? Are you hearing, “What can I do?” a lot? Try shaking things up with a simple themed morning or afternoon. We did Ninja Day because well, my kids like to ‘hi-ya’ around with stuff and I found these great ideas and had all the supplies on hand. Look around your house and see what you have available. Be creative and use up stuff!

The ideas I used, came from Frugal Fun for Boys and included a no-sew Ninja Mask, some Ninja Stress Balls,  and Pipe Cleaner Ninjas. All of these things are simple and don’t take much time. But, it led to hours of play over the next several days. I’ll admit, it was fun for me too!

We topped off the day by making some Ninja Whoopie Pies. Yum!

See, things don’t have to be fancy. Just use a little imagination and kids take it from there. Have fun!

Give Without Expecting Anything in Return

tomatoes-2-2

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor. Proverbs 22:9

Mmmmm, have you ever tasted a sun-kissed tomato off the vine in your backyard? Slightly warm and juice dripping down your hand. They are just so good. Is your garden getting to burst forth with goodness? Are you going to have more peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, and potatoes than you can handle at one time? Think about sharing it.

A generous man…” doesn’t mean giving away one million dollars. It means giving away what you can, because you can, because you want to. If you have more than enough food, find a neighbor, someone down the street who may be going through a rough patch, or even a food pantry and give.

Give without expecting anything in return.

Give because you will be blessed. This blessing isn’t going to be a windfall of one million dollars, but it might lead to new friendship or a new opportunity. In fact, giving without expecting in return may just make your heart glow and the feeling you get from doing it freely, without strings, may turn your life around.

Think you don’t have anything to share? Too debt-filled or stressed out? This is the perfect time to start giving because it takes you out of the equation and puts someone else’s needs on your mind. And, if you don’t have a garden or an overstocked pantry, rewrite the Proverb to your talent like this:

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his technology skills with someone whose computer just crashed.

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his love of kids by giving a stressed out mom a free babysitting night out.

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares a hug with someone and listened to them as they poured out their problems.

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares _____________________ with ________________.

See, I know you have it in you to find some way to share your talent, your extras, with someone around you. Look for and ask God for opportunities to share what you have been given. The blessings you get in return will end up being more than you gave.
